The telegraphs woven throughout the series designs are inspired by Carment's essay 'Telegraph Poles'. Carment writes, “I’ve always liked telegraph poles, especially the Australian variety..." The telegraph poles and long wires stretching across the spreads suggest movement, like a car driving through the Australian landscape. As the gradient progresses from morning to night, it demonstrates the passage of time and relates to Carment's experiences across time, landscapes, and the reader's movement through the essays. This follows the author on the journey of his experiences across Australia.
